Remembering Syed Ahmad, eminent economist and Urdu lover

October 30 is the first death anniversary of noted economist, former head and chairman of the Department of Economics at McMaster University, Canada, Prof Syed Ahmad. An alumnus of Jamia Millia, Patna University, Aligarh Muslim University and London School of Economics, Ahmad taught at universities in Aligarh, Khartoum (Sudan), Kent (England) and McMaster (Canada), was visiting professor at many other institutions and has left a legion of students and admirers across the globe.

Khuda Bakhsh, Hindu Muslim unity & cow protection movement

The biggest achievement of Khuda Baksh was creating a public library from the precious collections of his father and making his own valuable collection of books, which was later named as “Oriental Public Library”.

He started constructing a separate special building for the library, which was completed in two years. The library was inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor of Bangal Sir Charles Elliot in 1891. At that time it was having around 4000 hand written books in the library.

Hakeem Mohammad Kabiruddin – A 20th century academician of Unani Medicine

He founded an academic institute with hospital, named Faiz- e-Kabir, in Lahore and became the Head of Department (HOD) of Tarjuma (tarjuma is an Arabic as well as an urdu word for “translation”) at Tibbia college, New Delhi.

Later on May 16, 1917 he joined as a professor of anatomy at the Tibbia college.

Hakeem Kabiruddin established Dar al Masih in New Delhi in 1921 and in the same year he published a Tibbi journal “Risala ul Masih” which continued over a span of seven years until 1928.

Also, in 1926, he designed syllabus for the research centre at the Tibbia college of New Delhi.

When a British Captain left 953 Indian Hajjis (Pilgrims) to die in the Ocean

On 11th August 1880, the whole World woke up to the shocking news that SS Jeddah, a ship carrying 953 hajjis (pilgrims for Mecca), had drowned in the sea near Cape Guardafui, near the easternmost point of Africa, on 8th August. All on board perished except the captain, his wife, the chief officer, the chief engineer, the assistant engineer, and 16 Indian crew members. The survivors were rescued by SS Scindia and landed at Aden in Yemen.
